There are a ton of real estate agents out there, but how do you decide which one to settle on? here are a few simple questions to qualify possible agents:
1) "Are you local to the area?" - Local agents will be able to give you a good lay of the land from traffic, crime, and overall quality of a neighborhood. Also, they will have great connections and may know someone selling exactly what you're looking for!
2) "How many deals have you done?" - Having experience in the home buying/selling process will pay off in making sure the transaction runs smoothly and making offers when things get competitive.
3) Test their knowledge - ask a few questions about the real estate market in your area. A good agent should be able to give you a rundown the market and some tactics for making offers.
4) Do you get along well with this person? - You will be spending a lot of time with your agent searching for a home so make sure you aren't miserable or weirded out when speaking with them and that they can be trusted.
Where to look:
Start with talking with friends and family to get a referral on someone they've used in the past. Do an internet search as well. Many sites like Bigger Pockets, Zillow, and realtor.com have great agents ready to help.
I hope this helps when you're searching for an agent to help in your next purchase!
